Cautions of Red Flags for Botox Treatments Raised by a Valley Doctor PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 26 June 2009
It was not long ago that reports circled over the Internet giving warnings about Botox and "Do-it-yourself" Botox kits that are probably fake and being marketed on eBay. These items are no longer available over the Internet, but local physicians alert that, for safety reasons, anything that states "Do-it-yourself" should be avoided by everyone.

Licensed plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Cohen, who is from Scottsdale, said,

Worse case scenario, if it's injected in the wrong place, it can cause temporary muscle drooping or other irregularities.
He also stated that he has encountered many patients who required corrective plastic surgical procedures, which include a lot of women who visited other countries for a cheaper breast augmentation procedure.

Dr. Cohen said, "I've seen some patients where I'm pretty surprised at how severe the problem is, and it's amazing me that they didn't come in to see me sooner. And some cases, it's more of a minor issue that can be easily corrected." He added,

There can be problems with Botox. It still is a procedure, and I always tell patients, you need to be careful about who is injecting your Botox and make sure they have proper training.
He also discussed that incorrect positioning of the Botox shot could influence a patient's face. He explained, "If it is not injected properly, it might not last as long, so you won't get the value of the Botox. Worst case scenario, it could cause temporary muscle drooping or other irregularities that can look a little bit disconcerting for the patient."

Dr. Cohen mentioned to ABC15 News that an individual does not need to have a license to give shots. He said,

If you have a medical director who is responsible for the ultimate results of the medical procedure, then it's fine.  There are very good nurse injectors out there and other practitioners who do Botox who get very good results ... but you need to be careful where you're going.

He stated that people should trust their instincts and learn that a health facility with good reputation would be most likely to encourage the highest level of safety and health standards. He also said that many local surgeons' clinics have altered their prices in accordance to the economy. However, he cautioned that when a service that is being offered is very cheaply priced, it may be a signal that something is not right.

Dr. Cohen stated,

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. If the cost seems so incredibly low that it's way out of line with everybody else in the community, you have to wonder is there some corner that's being cut.
