Europe approves stem cell therapy for breast implants PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 April 2007
Following the success of trials in Japan using stem cells extracted through liposuction, regulators have given the green light for the procedure to be carried out in Europe.
The procedure involves removal of fat from the patient using liposuction. The fatty tissue removed is then purified and the extracted fat cells sterilised so that stem cells cultures can be isolated and cultivated. One of the first surgeons to adopt the technique is Vienna based plastic surgeon Dr. Karl-Georg Heinrich.

"For some time we have known, that stem cells exist in fat and that we remove these cells in liposuction,", said cosmetic surgeon DDr. Karl-Georg Heinrich. "We have learned what we can do with these valuable living cells and as a result we now harvest them instead of dumping them."

"The future has already begun," said DDr. Heinrich, "We now can use the patient's own living cells as a filler where ever more fullness is needed.

"Simply speaking we now have a method which allows us to take the best part of own fat, living stem cells and use them optimally."

The technique could offer major improvements in breast augmentations surgery, since the technique avoids the risks associated with silicone breast implants and provides more natural looking and feeling material.

DDr. Heinrich added "With stem cells we not only get 100% natural results - these will also last a lifetime."
