Banned gel used in botched breast augmentation PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 February 2007
An injectable gel, intended to be used as a soft tissue filler, is being used in some breast augmentations with terrible results.
The non-biodegradeable gel, marketed as Aquamid, is banned by the FDA in the United States, although permitted for use as a facial filler in countries such as Brazil, the UK and South Korea. This has not prevented it being used by rogue surgeons for breast augmentations in China and Hong Kong, with disastrous results.

So far, six women in Hong Kong have required mastectomies to repair the damage done when the filler was used in a breast augmentation procedure.

Local Plastic Surgeon Liang Wei-chung (梁偉中) acknowledged that the gel should not be used for breast augmentations, but defended its use in other procedures.

"The gel has been in use for facial augmentation for more than 10 years and approved in 35 countries. In that respect it has a good safety record," Liang said.

The main advantage of the gel, compared to other fillers was that it offered a more durable result, requiring less top-ups by patients. However, the permanence of the gel meant that reversing its effects was difficult for patients who were not happy with the outcome of their particular procedure.
