Breast asymmetry surgery improves self esteem, study shows PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 October 2006
Breast asymmetry correction surgery can significantly increase a patient's level of self esteem and quality of life, according to a recent study by Dr. Elvio Garcia from the Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Breast asymmetry, a common problem among adult females, is a syndrome whereby a woman's breasts differ is shape or size. Most women have a degree of breast asymmetry, but for women with severe breast asymmetry, the effect can be immense, causing problems for issues such as their self-image and selecting clothes.

The condition can affect shape as well as size, with some patients having one breast that droops significantly while the other does not, resulting in a noticeably unbalanced appearance. The symptom can be corrected by either breast reduction, breast lift or breast augmentation surgery.

The study by Dr Garcia involved 35 women who had undergone breast asymmetry surgery. The report noted that following surgery, there was a noticeable progressive improvement in the quality of life of the patients, as measured by the Short Form Health Survey. After six months, all of the patients showed significant improvements in mental health, self esteem and vitality.
