Breast implants reduce cancer risk, increase suicide risk PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 August 2006
A new study of Canadian women indicates that patients with breast implants, while not facing any increase in cancer or other diseases, appear to show a higher than average risk of suicide. Of the 40,000 patients in the study, women who'd received cosmetic breast augmentation surgery had a lower risk of dying from breast cancer.
The study will assuage fears that breast implants might be a risk factor for cancer or other major illnesses. However, the presence of the implant itself may not be the cause of the lower death rate, since the surgery itself will tend to make the patient more aware of, and available for breast cancer screening. "To some extent, what you're seeing is a screening effect," said Dr. Howard Morrison of the Public Health Agency of Canada in Ottawa.

The research, however, confirmed that women with breast implants have a higher suicide rate than average. Dr. Morrison noted that other studies have identified lower self-esteem and higher rates of depression among women who opt for breast augmentation surgery.

Compared with the general population, women who had received breast augmentation and other cosmetic surgery were about one-quarter less likely to die of cancer, and their risks of death from other major diseases were similarly lower.

Women with breast implants were, however, 73 percent more likely than those in the general population to commit suicide.
