Budget Breast Augmentation offered to UK patients PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 22 January 2007
In a move designed to ward off competition from cut-price overseas medical clinics, British plastic surgeons are offering cut price breast augmentation procedures to UK women.
The move slashes the cost of breast enlargement by almost $6,000 and is targeted at les affluent consumers who might otherwise be tempted to have their breast augmentation procedure performed in cheaper locations such as Poland or the Czech Republic. Whereas the price previously charged for a breast augmentation was $13,900, the price of the procedure will be just $8,400 if performed through the new organisation, MyBreast Org.

The surgeons say that the price cut has been made possible by concentrating purely on breast augmentations, which is one of the most popular procedures in the UK, with 26,000 procedures conducted last year. The organisation has the backing of leading surgeons, including Norman Waterhouse, former president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

"Breast augmentation is very price-sensitive and, if you are a young woman working as a secretary, for example, then an extra £100 makes all the difference,” said Waterhouse. “We have been waving the quality flag for 15 years but women will choose to have a cheaper provider."

However, the launch has been criticised by those who say that it encourages vulnerable women to have surgery for non-medical reasons, and say that it exploits women suffering from low self-confidence or Body Dysmorphic Disorder. These critics would prefer that such low cost surgery was not available, so that the option of undergoing affordable aesthetic surgery would not be available to many lower paid women.

“Women who have breast enlargement are a more vulnerable population. Any procedure that encourages women to have breast augmentation when they are vaguely thinking about it, by making it easier and quicker, is riding roughshod over this vulnerability." said Dr Eileen Bradbury, a Harley Street consultant psychologist.

“There are a lot of potential problems, even in the best hands, and when they ‘pile them high, sell them cheap’ the chances of having a less than good technical result must be increased.” she added.

However, the surgeons behind the scheme say that this is unfounded, pointing out that all breast augmentation operations will be performed by British trained consultant plastic surgeons with a specialist cosmetic surgery qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons in London.
