Man boobs phenomenon crowding out breast implant surgeries |

"Moobs", the phenomenon of "man boobs" or gynecomastia is becoming such a problem for men that busy surgeons are having to place women seeking breast augmentation on waiting lists. Such is the scale of the problem that nearly twice as many men in Britain sought liposuction for gynecomastia last year.
There are various theories as to why the number of men with gynecomastia or man boobs has increased in recent years. These include:
- Increase in level of female hormones in drinking water, caused by women taking the contaceptive pill and their urine containing traces of female hormones;
- Alcohol use;
- Marijuana use;
- Increasing levels of obesity, leading to fat deposit around the male breast area
Figuers released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) shows that there were 4,000 liposuction procedures to remove male breasts in 2006, compared with 2,100 in 2005.
Apart from liposuction for gynecomastia, Plastic Surgeons in the UK reported an increase of 31% in the number of procedures provided in 2006, compared with 2005. In particular, they saw:
- Brow lifts - up 50%
- Eyelid surgery - up 48%
- Tummy tucks - up 47%
- Neck lifts - up 44%
92% of patients were women, and the most popular procedure continues to be for breast enlargement, with liposuction the third most popular procedure.
“People no longer consider plastic surgery to be wacky or just for the rich,” said Adam Searle, a leading Plastic Surgeon. “Plastic surgery is now considered to be permissible in our culture.”
