Man kidnaps wife to prevent her breast implant operation PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 May 2007
A man who abducted his wife from a London hospital to prevent her from undergoing a breast implant operation has been jailed for 20 months at the Old Bailey Court in England.
James McCarthy burst into the hospital and dragged his wife, Kerry, out of the hospital ward, shouting "Don't do it. I like you as you are." His wife then became hysterical, telling shocked hospital staff that she was afraid for her life and pleading with them to save her.

However, the husband succeeded in getting her out of the hospital by grabbing the clothes around her neck and dragging her out onto the street. Outside the hospital, she managed to escape from her husband and ran into a nearby office building where she collapsed.

The husband's defence attorney told the court: "This defendant did not want his wife to undergo an augmentation operation. He did not think it was necessary. He was also worried about the surgery itself. He went to the hospital to talk her out of having the operation. When she refused he reacted in the way he did."

McCarthy, 27, of Canning Town in East London, pleaded guilty to a charge of kidnapping and was sentenced to 20 months in prison. At the time of the kidnapping, the couple had been married for a year and had a nine month old child. The court was told that when she was two months pregnant with this child and undergoing a scan at a hospital, McCarthy had burst in and punched her in the abdomen. They have separated since the kidnapping incident.
