Number of Male Breast Surgeries Growing PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 29 June 2009
A large number of men are availing of male breast surgical procedures in an effort to get rid of their condition that usually draws in not sympathy but more mockery. In Scotland, the number of private treatment to decrease the excess fat tissues on chests of men nearly doubled in 2008 from 22 to 40 surgical procedures, this in spite of the procedure costing about £4,000 on average.

For 2009, the clinic Transform reported that the number of male breast reduction surgeries continues to rise, with additional 18 surgical procedures during the first four months, even though the country is suffering from liquidity crisis and recession.

It was also verified by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons that more reductions are occurring for gynaecomastia (excessive development of the breasts in males); in 2008, procedures for this condition increased by 44% in the UK.
While the country together increases weight, about 40% of British men are figured to have some level of gynaecomastia.

Treatment for this condition has recently become the fifth most widely accepted cosmetic surgical procedure for men; nose jobs, eyelid surgery, ear corrections and liposuction are those that are more popular.

The surgical procedure for man boobs or moobs is not available on the NHS at this time, except when the patient is determined to have serious psychological pain.

We have had a steady rise in numbers in Scotland despite the current recession. The problem has always existed but it is only very recently that people have started talking about it and realising that they can do something about it,
said by Shami Thomas, who is a spokesperson for Transform. She added,
Those who have undergone the treatment say it has completely transformed their lives.

Even though scientists are not sure, some of them think that cases of gynaecomastia are rising due to increasing levels of the female hormone estrogen in the environment, which is consumed via food and drink. However, there are events wherein the cases of moobs are caused by a long-lasting hormonal imbalance that brings forth to the development of surplus breast tissues.
