NZ Surgeon in botched breast reduction case named PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 November 2007
The surgeon who was found guilty of professional misconduct following  botched breast reduction procedure has been named by New Zealand's High Court as Doctor Gornoori Rama Krishnayya. The Napier based surgeon performed the breast reduction procedure on February 15, 2005, but things started going wrong for the patient shortly afterwards.
The patient, Nicola Dick, suffered an infection within a week of the breast reduction procedure and she told the New Zealand Health Practitioners' Disciplinary Tribunal that her breasts oozed so much fluid that she had to change her dressings every two hours. She added that when Dr.  Krishnayya removed the stitches in her breasts, gaping holes were revealed. She required four reconstructive procedures to repair the damage to her breasts, and faces further surgery later this year.

At the tribunal hearing, Krishnayya was found guilty of professional misconduct and was fined NZ$5,000, with additional costs of NZ$15,000. He appealed to the High Court to have his name suppressed from public disclosure, but the court ruled against him, deciding instead to make his identity known.
