Radio station offers breast implants in competition PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 April 2007
A radio station in Orlando, Florida has stirred a controversy by offering free breast implant surgery to the woman who "parties the hardest" in what has been labelled a tasteless publicity stunt.
Real Radio 104.1 is basing the competition around a slumber party that it will host, with the prize being awarded to one of the five participants who, in the eyes of the judges, "parties the hardest". However, the stunt may have backfired since it emerged that the doctor chosen by the radio station did not disclose his past difficulties with State regulators.

Dr. Barry Kaplan, the surgeon who will perform the implant surgery, was previously found by the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine to have "failed to meet the minimum standards of performance" and "undertook activities for which he was not qualified by training or experience". As a result of the ruling, Kaplan was ordered to pay several thousand dollars in fines and ordered to take continuing education. Kaplan is also limited to performing surgeries that require only a minimal amount of anaesthesia.

The radio station played down the significance of this ruling, with presenter Russ Rollins referring to the ruling as "paperwork problems".

"When I went and talked to him he showed me everything and explained what it really was," Rollins said. "There's certain paperwork he's supposed to turn in when the board comes by and he didn't turn in the proper paperwork."

The radio station has developed a reputation for staging publicity stunts, with the breast implant competition coming on the heels of the previous "Fatties at the Fair" day. In this promotion, obese women were sent to the Central Florida Fair to eat food all day long and ride on the rollercoasters.
