Transferring fat from thighs to breasts PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 26 September 2006
Patients considering breast augmentation surgery but concerned by the possibility of the augmented breasts looking artificial, are considering fat grafting breast augmentation in greater numbers. The desire to achieve a more natural look is compounded by lingering fears by some patients, regarding the safety of implants, following the silicon scare stories of the past.
Fat grafting involves two procedures. First the excess fat is removed from the body using a canula and conventional liposuction methods. However, instead of the excess fat being disposed of, it is then surgically transferred to the patient's breasts. Both procedures are conducted on the same day and the combined procedure can take between five and eight hours.

"I would primarily take fat from the love handles and waist, but also from the thighs and put it into the breast in a very meticulous slow fashion," said plastic surgeon, Dr. Sydney Reese Coleman.

In addition to providing a more natural look for patients in conventional cosmetic breast augmentation surgery, fat grafting has been used in fine tuning of breast reconstructions and to disguise any edges or rippling of existing silicone gel and saline implants. However, at a typical cost of USD$18,000, the procedure is significantly more expensive than traditional breast augmentation.
