Yoga exercise bursts woman's breast implant PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 12 March 2007
Calls have been made for the ban on silicone breast implants to be lifted in Taiwan after it was revealed that a saline breast implant burst after a woman was performing a yoga exercise.
The 32 year old woman had undergone breast implant surgery two years ago to change from an A cup to a C cup and had received saline breast implants, the only type available since the Taiwanese government banned silicone breast implants amid health fears over their safety. Three months ago, the woman took up yoga exercises to improve her fitness levels.

The woman, who usually performed yoga exercises for just three to four hours each week, woke up the morning after her yoga class to discover that one of her breasts had deflated. Her surgeon, Chen Huan-tang, discovered that the saline breast implant had broken and the saline fluid had leaked into the woman's body.

"It was like a leaking tire at that point ... By the time she woke up the next morning, she was no longer symmetrical" said Chen.

"She told me that she felt tremendous pressure on her implants during several poses, but carried on nevertheless. She's a perfectionist when it comes to her figure," he said.

Chen said that apart from the flattened breast, no harm was caused to the woman's body as a result of the leak. He provided her with a new saline implant, for which she was charged the full cost.

A saline breast implant can normally withstand up to 50 kilograms of pressure, but patients are advised not to undertake intense or vigorous chest exercises. Silicone breast implants are less likely to break than saline implants, but the consequences to the patient of a burst implant are far more serious with silicone than with saline.

Chen added "The [pressure] tests subject the implants to almost instantaneous impact while yoga poses are sustained and repeated over time. Perhaps the repetitive stress wore out the material."

It is not the first time that breast implants have burst under pressure. In a separate incident, a Bulgarian woman's life was saved when her breast implants burst and absorbed much of the impact sustained during a car crash.
