Blepharoplasty - Getting rid of Hound dog Eyes PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 24 November 2006
Blepharoplasty, also known as the an eyelid tuck, is performed to rejuvenate the eyelid and remove eyelid bags and dark circles under the eyes. It is the third most common cosmetic plastic surgery operation performed in the United States and is normally the first thing considered by patients seeking to rejuvenate their appearance.
How is Blepharoplasty performed?

The traditional technique for a blepharoplasty involves making an incision on the outside fo the lower eyelid in order to remove excess fat and skin. However, with this technique, there is a risk that the actual shape of the eyelid can be modified, with the outer portion of the lower eyelid turning down and revealing too much of the white portion of the eye, a syndrome called "scleral show". It is referred to by surgeons as hound dog eyes or sad eyed look.

A newer technique for performing plastic surgery uses transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which avoids damaging the muscle that supports the lower eyelid. Instead of using a scalpel, a laser is used to create a small incision through the conjunctiva on the inside of the lower eyelid. The fat is then removed or even repositioned from the inside of the eyelid, the eyelid is tightened and then an arcus marginalis release is performed to correct the dark circles under the eyes.

The benefits of using this type of laser blepharoplasty are:

1. No visible scar on the outside of the lower eyelid
2. No change to the eyelid shape
3. Quicker healing time
4. Less bruising to the area
5. Avoids the danger of hound dog eyes

Sometimes a blepharoplasty can be combined with collagen or Botox treatment to remove crow's feet around the eyes, further enhancing the rejuvenation effect of the procedure.
