Eyelash transplants surge in demand PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 October 2006
Cosmetic surgeons in the US have begun using hair plugs technology to provide patients with enhanced eyelashes.
The transplanted eyelashes are formed from live human hair taken from the patient's head and then inserted into the patient's eyelids, to provide the long, sweeping lashes that previously would be achieved by using mascara or adhesive eyelash extensions. Because they are made from live human hair, the lashes continue growing after transplantation.

"Longer, thicker lashes are an ubiquitous sign of beauty. Eyelash transplantation does for the eyes what breast augmentation does for the figure," according to Dr Alan Bauman, a surgeon who specialises in the eyelash transplants. "This is a brand new procedure for the general public (and) it is going to explode,"

Each procedure, costing $3,000 per eye, uses about 40 hair follicles taken from the patient's scalp. These are then attached individual to the patient's eyelid using microstitching techniques. The patient is awake for the procedure, with only local anaesthesia and sedation required.

Although the technology was originally developed to treat burn victims, nearly 4 out of every 5 eyelash transplants are now carried out for cosmetic reasons.
