The eyes have it PDF Print E-mail

The area around the eyes is one of the most delicate parts of the face, and because it has the thinnest skin, the effects of time, stress and exposure to the sun can appear first around the eyes.
One of the most common features affecting most women are the wrinkles and furrows around the eyes, commonly referred to as crow's feet. These can be treated with injections such as Botox, which will temporarily paralyse the muscles under the skin, thereby smoothing the skin surface. In addition, laser therapy and a chemical peel can help in bringing fresher, younger skin cells to the fore, removing the appearance of dry, dead skin around the eyes.

The problem of hooded or drooping eyelids is a factor of time. As we age, the skin on the eyelids loses some its elasticity, which can lead to the effect of drooping and sagging eyelids. This condition also responds well to Botox therapy, this time applied to the muscles that we use to squint. The paralysis in these muscles, brought about by the Botox injection, actually lifts heavy eyelids and opens the eyes more, giving the face a more youthful appearance.

Hollow or sunken eyes is normally caused by a loss of fat cells below the eye itself, but can be treated using injectable fillers such as Restylane or Juviderm. These fillers are injected under the skin surface, below the eye and plump up the area under the eye. Because the area under the eye is not in as much shadow, this will have the effect of brightening the eye area, providing a more youthful appearance.

Dark circles under the eyes are normally caused by a combination of vein clusters, accumulation of blood in the skin under the eye and thin skin under the eye, resulting in darkened areas immediately below the lower eyelid. Treatment for this condition will normally be achieved through the use of injectable fillers, which will thicken the skin, making it less transparent. With the skin less transparent, the blood under the skin is less visible and the dark circles lose their prominence.

Puffy areas under the eyes are caused by fat pockets, but unlike the Botox and injectable fillers discussed above, these will require the attention of a qualified cosmetic surgeon. While great strides have been made in the area of micro liposuction in recent years, the tissue surrounding the eyes is so sensitive that only a specialist with suitable expertise and experience should work in this area of the body.
