Direct excision of Turkey Jowl Deformity recommended in study PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 16 January 2007
For many men, as they grow older, the aging process can lead to what is known as a turkey jowl deformity in the neck. This is caused by a combination of accumulated submental fat, redundant skin and platysmal banding (visibility of the muscles under the chin and down the neck).
Surgeons in the past have corrected this turkey jowl feature using a combination of face lift and neck lift procedures, but the cost of such procedures has meant that they have been available to only a small proportion of the population.

However, two plastic surgeons, William H. Lindsey, MD and Philip E. Zapanta, MD, writing in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, have found that direct excision (removal) of the turkey jowl feature under local anaesthesia is equally effective in correcting the deformity, with a significant reduction in cost and recovery time for the patient.

They reviewed 100 cases where the deformity was treated with direct excision, and found that the overwhelming majority were successful, with minimal scarring or requirement of major post operative correction. Just eight of the patients had extrusions from the sutures, four of the patients had mild scar hypertrophy (treated with steroid injections) and only two of the patients required minor scar revisions a year after the surgery.

All 100 patients were reported to be satisfied with the results, with no reports of postoperative bleeding, infection or nerve injury. The surgeons propose that this procedure is far more cost effective, and can bring treatment for turkey jowl deformity to a wider section of the population, with minimal expense, downtime and complication rates.
