Americans Fight Job Loss With Plastic Surgery Operations PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 07 May 2009
For many people who would undergo surgery, what was once an act of vanity exercise has turned into a battle for economic survival. Some say that updating the face would give one a better chance in interviews.

It has been known for a couple of months now that the world economy has been constantly dipping. There have been mass layoffs, and many people are looking to have an advantage on the competition during these hard times.

There is another way that many of us may not have thought of. With the current economic situation, with failing banks and stocks free falling, prices of different commodities have risen, and a lot of people are jobless. It has been very competitive in the employment sector. That is why looking good could be as significant as the content of one's résumé.

Dr. Amiva Prasad, a plastic surgeon, said,

They come to me to get a little bit of an edge.
He said that he observes an upsurge in the cosmetic surgery business while news on world economics is getting worse.
Dr. Prasad said,
What they do is they're all ready, they have their resume and then they look in the mirror and say you know I need to do something.

Theresa Rampelo, a 53-year-old patient, said that she is hoping that, if she loses her job, repairing her deep facial lines through surgery will give her an upward boost. She said,

I just feel getting rid of them will make me look younger, so this way if I am thrown out there in the workforce it will be easier for me to get a job.

With the same concerns, Bridget Schoonover said that she will also be undergoing a surgery. She said,

It's something to make you look more attractive, younger...more competitive in the workplace. Looks do count, unfortunately.

Stephen Viscusi, an executive recruiter, said that cosmetic surgical operations are not considered a luxury anymore. He said,

It's not vanity and it's not superficial. He added, It's now practical in these recessionary times.

Rampelo already observes a significant improvement a couple of minutes after her operation. She said that she will now have the advantage that she needs. She also said,

I feel better. I'll look better and I'll definitely be more confident.

Dr. Prasad stated that the most common cosmetic surgical operations are Botox and injected fillers. These are followed by surgery to remove bags under the eyes.
