Cosmetic Surgical Procedure “Is Wrecking Lives as Profit Prioritized Over Patient Care” PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 15 May 2009
Experts have cautioned that thousands of people are putting their looks and even their lives on the line as an increasing number of plastic surgeons are thinking of making a profit first before the patient’s safety.

As reported by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), over 35,000 people undergo cosmetic surgery yearly in their pursuit of enhancing their physical appearance; the association also states that the industry has a value of over £1billion annually.

Extensive evidence that potential patients are being subjected to insistent advertising techniques, however, has been disclosed in a recent undercover survey by Which?. Also, the survey concluded that sales targets are often being prioritized more over integrity.

Earnings have taken precedence over patient care, with ‘cowboy’ doctors every now and then endangering the lives of the patients, as cautioned by the experts. Cowboy cosmetic clinics that are utilizing reckless advertisements to encourage women into undergoing multiple procedures at once are putting the lives of the patients at risk, as has recently advised by the BAAPS; moreover, the association has raised concerns about ads promoting fake expectations of plastic surgery. The past president of BAAPS, Douglas McGeorge, said, “For some clinics, it’s all about getting people through the till, rather than patient care.”

Over a ten-year period, substandard cosmetic surgery procedures and discontentment of patients led to claims against private doctors that amount to £8.5 million, as shown by the latest data from the Medical Defence Union, which offers insurance to medical practitioners.

The rapid climb in the plastic surgery industry, as mentioned by personal injury lawyer Mike Saul, is accountable for the problems that he observes everyday. He said at his Manchester office,

What I am seeing is extremely frightening. He added, People are innocently booking in for surgery, believing it will transform their lives for the better, and they’re coming out maimed and disfigured, often for life. The result of the boom is that a number of commercial clinics have sprung up, and are putting profit before patients, and commerce before ethics. The result is that operations are being rushed to fit more patients in, which means mistakes are more likely to be made. The industry also suffers from inadequate regulation.”

Mr. Saul stated that the surgical procedure that most often ends in claims for compensation is the breast enlargement operation. He said, “Our clients have experienced everything from asymmetry, nerve damage, inappropriate scars to cases in which breast implants have slid down from the breast and ended up over the stomach area.” He added,

I also frequently see significant injury - both physical and psychological - resulting from facelifts, eyelid work, tummy tucks, nose jobs and liposuction.
