Diwali festival boosts demand in India for cosmetic surgery PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 October 2006
The Indian Hindu festival of Diwali has seen a reported increase of up to 40% in the number of people seeking tummy tucks, breast augmentations, and nose jobs, according to providers of cosmetic surgery in India.
"We have more clients requesting cosmetic procedures at this time of year and I have done about 15 nose surgeries alone this month compared with eight normally," said Vijay Kakkar, a Delhi-based Cosmetic Surgeon at private hospitals Mata Chanan Devi and Max Healthcare.

"Many want to give themselves a gift for Diwali but there are also a lot of parties during the festive season and people naturally want to look their best."

In addition to the increased social activity associated with Diwali that has Indian customers trying to look their best, the time away from the gaze of colleagues while celebrating the holiday allows patients time to recover from their cosmetic surgery.

The most popular surgery among Indians are nose jobs (rhinoplasty) with clients often asking for noses similar to famous Bollywood actors.

Cosmetic surgeons say Bollywood heartthrob, Shah Rukh Khan's nose is popular amongst male clients, with women tending to ask for a nose like actress and former Miss World beauty Aishwarya Rai.

The last five years has seen a huge increase in demand for cosmetic surgery in India, due to growing affluence of a booming middle class and the relatively low cost of cosmetic surgery in the country, with prices for procedures such as breast augmentation, liposuction, body contouring and tummy tucks costing as little as 20% of the cost of similar cosmetic surgery procedures in Western countries.
