Doctors slam Plastic Surgery Prize Draw PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 January 2007
A new prize draw that offers patients the chance to win £6,000 ($11,600) of free cosmetic surgery, by buying a £1.50 ($2.90) ticket has been slammed by plastic surgeons as "plumbing new depths"
The prize draw, run by a UK firm that organises cosmetic surgery vacations in former eastern bloc country Czech Republic, allows potential patients to buy a ticket by dialling a premium rate telephone number, or by sending a text message from their mobile phone to a different premium rate number.

Europa International, the company behind the promotion, claims the draw to be the first of its kind in the world. The company says that the draw will take place once 1,000 people have bought a ticket, or after three months, whichever comes first. The winner of the competition will be flown from the UK to the Czech capital Prague, and will have the use of a luxury apartment during their stay.

The winning prize is defined as any of the following:
  • Liposuction to three areas of the body
  • Breast Augmentation
  • Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery
However, the British Association of Aesthetic Surgeons, the professional body for cosmetic surgeons in the UK, slammed the promotion. Douglas McGeorge, consultant plastic surgeon and President of the BAAPS said:

“I am appalled at this new scheme but unfortunately not surprised. Companies are plumbing new depths to take advantage of a growing interest in plastic surgery by launching unscrupulous marketing gimmicks which violate not only an established code of ethics where financial and date-linked incentives are prohibited, but also common sense.”

He was joined in his condemnation of the promotion by Adam Searle, former President of the BAAPS, who commented,

“The offer of a cosmetic surgery procedure as a prize is an awful manifestation of the trivialisation of medical care in general, and aesthetic surgery in particular. Any patient making irreversible decisions in circumstances of hype, excitement and emotion, are putting themselves at very great risk. Any normal patient – doctor relationship is completely abandoned in any such framework of medical care. This is a practice I unreservedly and utterly condemn.”
