Exercise resistant fat PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 27 February 2006
Do you find that no matter how much you diet or exercise, there are some parts of your body where you just can't get rid of excess fat? You're not alone and you may have what's called exercise resistant fat.

Some fat cells have a predominance of beta receptors and others have a dominance of alpha receptors. Beta receptors accept the presence of adrenaline, a product of exercise. When adrenaline attaches to beta receptors, it triggers fat breakdown. Consequently, fatty areas with a predominance of beta receptors respond to exercise and a person on a regular exercise program will see noticeable results.

The opposite is the case with fatty areas with a predominance of alpha receptors. When adrenaline attaches to alpha receptors, fat breakdown slows down and the fat tends to accumulate more. This is one of the reasons most people will experience problem areas that just won't respond to a consistent and regular exercise problem. These problem areas are typically around the hips, tummy and upper thighs, leading to love handles, saddle bags, spare tyres in men and a sagging tummy in women.

However, it is possible, with medical treatment, to transform exercise resistant fat into exercise responsive fat. The process is called Infusion Lipolysis and involces one visit to a clinic for treatment, followed by ten weeks of home treatment, using surface, transdermal medications. The net effect is to block alpha receptors (exercise resistant fat) and stimulate beta receptors (exercise responsive fat). Following treatment, the patient will typically see an improvement in the response to the normal exercise program in what were previously problem areas.
