| Hymen restoration procedure dubbed a crime by Muslim leaders |

One lawyer, Abdul Hamid Al Kumaiti, described hymen restoration as an "act of deception". "When a girl is about to get married, dupes her husband-to-be by claiming that she is still a virgin, then this is considered an act of cheating. Deception and cheating are punishable by the UAE law." Rather than probing a girl's medical record, he proposes a new marriage contract that would require full disclosure of both partners' premarital history. His views on hymen restoration are supported by the prominent local Islamic scholar Dr Ahmad Al Kubaisi who said that such operations are considered as deception and covering up of a crime, which is prohibited in Islam. The importance of an intact hymen is an important issue in many Arabic and Islamic countries, where a woman is expected to be a virgin until married. Those women who fail to meet this obligation face having their wedding annulled or being killed by their own family, in order to "restore family honour". However, some Islamic scholars were keen to point out that hymen restoration surgery is acceptable in cases where the woman has been raped, although even this is debated within the Islamic community. |
