Internet daters slimmer than average PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 October 2006
A study by cosmetic surgery website www.lipo.com concludes that most single women searching for love on the internet are slimmer than average.
While many would expect internet dating sites to offer a cross-section of the population, and would therefore expect the members of an internet dating site to represent all shapes and sizes as seen in the population at large, it appears that most women looking for love online are at least average, with a disproportionately higher number falling into the "slender" and "athletic and toned" category.

The study compared 100 profiles of single women chosen at random from the popular internet dating site www.match.com, and in particular how these women described their "body type". It found that 75% of women on the website described their body type as either "Average", "Slender", or "Athletic and Toned". Just 23% of the women described themselves as "Curvy", with the remaining 2% describing themselves as carrying "A Few Extra Pounds".

The results differ markedly from the general population. If one is to take the euphemisms "Slender", "Athletic and Toned" and "Average" to represent the medical descriptions for body mass index of "Desirable" or "Normal Range" (Body Mass Index of 20-25), the proportion of these people in the average population is 35.4%, compared to the 75% of single women on internet dating sites who fall into this category. Even if one is to exclude women describing themselves as "Slender" on the basis that these women may fall into the category of underweight (General Population 6%, Internet Dating Women 28%), the study would indicate that 47% of the women looking for love online have a normal or desirable BMI, compared with just 35.4% of the average population.

A spokesman for the Internet dating industry commented "Maybe the people who use our services have looked after themselves, are in good shape and are using the most selective method of finding their one true love in life. It's also possible that people who use the internet to find their true love are more active in all aspects of their lives, resulting in them having a better physique."

Asked if it was possible that people were taking advantage of the anonymity of the internet to misrepresent themselves, the spokesman responded "I don't think that's likely. Do you?"
