Koreans go under the knife to improve job prospects PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 16 November 2006
Three quarters of Koreans would consider getting cosmetic surgery, believing that good looks would give them a competitive advantage in the job market, according to a new study.
The study, conducted by Career, the Korean online recruitment site, found that 78% of respondents have considered going under the knife at some point. The job seekers believe that candidates who appear to be physically fit will give potential employers the impression that they can manage their lifestyle well

"Making a good first impression with employers has become the most important step in landing a job,’’ said Kim Kyong-eun, a senior manager of the headhunter Seoul Scout.

"Employers judge everything about the recruits, including their characteristics and lifestyles, by first closely examining their looks during the initial interview. Realistically and directly, appearances are important.’’

"To some effect, workers or job seekers do realize that an angelic and charming appearance will help them secure jobs and stay competitive.’" said Moon Ji-young, a spokeswoman for Career.

The three most desired cosmetic procedures among Koreans are a nose job, eyelid surgery, and cosmetic dental work.

A high number of male and female respondents said that after undergoing plastic surgery they wanted to look like actor Jang Dong-gun and actress Han Ga-in.
