Liposuction - the gift that really sucks

Doctors have warned against what is reported to be an increasing trend of giving cosmetic surgery vouchers as Christmas gifts. The warning comes amid a boom in the number of clinics offering vouchers for relatively low cost procedures such as Botox and dermabrasion.

Doctors recommend that only a patient should decide to embark upon any form of cosmetic treatment for themselves, and that giving a gift voucher for cosmetic surgery may put unnecessary pressure to go through with the procedure on the recipient of the gift.

While obviously a well-intentioned gesture, doctors are concerned that a gift voucher for cosmetic surgery will not allow the patient the proper opportunity to discuss the procedure with the clinician or surgeon and to weigh up whether or not the procedure is right for them. In addition, the report an increase in the number of non medical clinics offering Botox vouchers, saying that Botox should only be administered by a trained professional.

In addition, relationship counsellors caution that a voucher for a cosmetic surgery procedure may inadvertently insult or offend the recipient. One London-based relationship counsellor, said:

"You need to think about the message you are giving to your partner by presenting her with a voucher to improve her appearance. Are you saying that she's got a flaw that you would like addressed? Are you saying that your feelings for her are only skin-deep? My advice to men is to tread carefully and think twice. If she ask you whether she needs a boob job or tummy tuck, count to ten before you answer."
