New survey reveals most women unhappy with their body PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 February 2007
A UK survey of 25,000 men and women reveals that half of the women are unhappy with their body shape and would consider plastic surgery such as liposuction to improve it.
The BBC Radio 1 survey also shows a gloomy picture for younger women, whose body image can be distorted by comparisons to size zero models. Half of the women said that they wanted to change a lot of things about their looks, and more than half (53%) believe that their poor body image prevents them from having a boyfriend or relaxing in a relationship.

Despite the fact that the average dress size in the UK is 16, a third of the women who were size 12 and two thirds who are size 14, consider themselves overweight or fat. Some of the women are resorting to dieting to try to address their body shape, with 20% reported to be following a diet at the moment, and 43% admitting that they've skipped meals in the past in an attempt to lose a few pounds and 8% saying that they have induced vomiting to control their weight.

However, with dieting presenting an ongoing struggle, nearly half of women said that they would consider plastic surgery to improve their body shape. Breast implants and liposuction were the two most popular procedures that women would opt for.

Men fared better in the poll, with almost half of them feeling comfortable with their appearance and less than a quarter saying that they would consider plastic surgery.
