Pre-nup nip and tuck in India PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 December 2006
Indian couples planning to tie the knot are increasingly opting for a pre-nup. Not a pre-nuptial agreement covering their future wealth, but pre-nuptial surgery in an effort to attract a suitable partner in an arranged marriage, look perfect for their big day, or to restore bits and pieces that may have been damaged in their days of singledom.
Dr Lokesh Kumar, Plastic Surgeon at the Delhi Aesthetic Clinic in New Delhi said: “Appearance counts a lot, especially in arranged marriages.”

Plastic surgeons report that the three most popular procedures for women immediately prior to marriage are nose jobs, breast augmentations and hymen restoration. While normally, the top three surgical procedures would include a tummy tuck or liposuction, the presence of hymen restoration in the top three procedures is unique to a country with strongly religious and conservative values. While the younger generation may adopt increasingly liberal lifestyles, their parents may not share these views and many expect the bride to be a virgin.

One newly married bride, speaking on grounds of anonymity said: “I understand the importance of trust and honesty in a marriage, but I had no choice as my in-laws are very conservative people.”
