At the same time that a US politician is calling for plastic surgery in Minnesota to be taxed, South Korean officials today announced that citizens will be granted a tax credit for the cost of plastic and cosmetic surgery.
The move, which is temporary and lasts until November 2008, has been made to increase the transparency of the income sources of medical institutions and encourage more people to avail of private healthcare, according to officials.
The new law was passed yesterday at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook. The law will be applied retroactively, so patients who have had any plastic surgery in South Korea since December 2006 will also benefit from the legislation.
