U.S. politician calls for tax on plastic surgery PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 February 2007
A Minnesota State Representative has called for a 6.5% sales tax to be applied to plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments such as Botox and collagen injections.
Phyllis Kahn has angered consumers with her claim that anybody who has the money to pay for plastic surgery can afford to pay the tax that she would levy.

"There aren't a lot of homeless people and there aren't a lot of people who don't have enough money for food who are getting optional cosmetic surgery," she said.

The Minneapolis Democrat estimates that her proposal would raise about $7 million each year, which could then be spent by the State Government. She is not thought to have included in her calculations the fact that some people who otherwise would have purchased treatments will not pay for the treatments at the higher price, and that the new tax is likely to reduce demand and lead to job losses among medical providers.

The plan was criticized by leading plastic surgeons, who said that the money will come from the pockets of women who've worked hard to pay for their treatment.

"It hurts working women who save up their money and work hard and try to do something for themselves once in a while," said Dr. Richard D'Amico, president-elect of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
.
At present, New Jersey is the only state that places a tax on plastic surgery. The tax, which brings in an additional $11 million for State Government, was repealed by New Jersey lawmakers last year, but Governor Jon Corzine vetoed their move, leaving the tax in place.

Kahn's proposed tax will exclude medically necessary procedures, such as reconstruction following accident or burning, as well as laser eye surgery and braces to correct bite problems.
