New mothers in Britain are spending about £6 billion (USD$12.5 billion) a year on liposuction, cosmetic surgery and Botox treatments for themselves, and fashionable clothes for their newborn babies, according to a survey conducted by online bank, Egg.
The pressure on UK women to regain the body shape that they had before pregnancy has led to a huge increase in demand for what plastic surgeons call a mommy makeover, a combination of liposuction, tummy tuck and breast lift.
Much of the social pressure for women to quickly regain their shape is felt to come from media portrayal of celebrities, with 20% of those surveyed admitting that they had been influenced by celebrity parents such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie.
Alison Wright, Chief Marketing Officer at Egg, said:Certain life stages, such as having a baby, mean that we occasionally need a cash injection. Financially a new baby can cause havoc because of the combined burden of extra costs and reduced income. This is where a little bit of financial planning can go a long way ensuring new mums can enjoy being new mums without having to worry about money matters.
