Dr. Jason Shapiro, who practices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, stated, If people feel good about themselves, they look younger, they are more confident and they make a better impression to a prospective employer. He added, This is our way of giving something back to people who have lost their jobs and are trying to get back on their feet in a difficult time. One was from a teacher who lost her job after working at the same school for almost three decades and found herself at interviews being compared to girls 20 to 30 years her junior. Perhaps by having some minor cosmetic enhancements, it would give her back her confidence. It could be injections to erase wrinkles or add volume, liposuction under the chin to create a tighter jaw line or acupuncture to reduce stress. As part of the package, the chosen patients (age range 30s to late 50s) will also get hair treatments from a local salon, as well as counseling from a job recruitment agency. America's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reported that, from their recent data, in 2008, complaints about age bias in offices added up to 24,582, which is an increase of 29% from the previous year. Fifty-five-year-old Jerry Johnson of Hollywood, Florida, said, "You have to be youthful in today's market." His furniture firm shut down in 2008; since then, he has already been to quite a few number of failed employment interviews. He remarked, I've been told I'm overqualified and too senior for a job, so any little thing I can do to improve myself helps. I would like to lose a few wrinkles. South Florida is famous for being the US’s center of cosmetic surgical procedures, especially after the hit series Nip/Tuck, which is a Miami-based TV drama. However, it is noted that surgeons from other places have also joined the campaign to put the wrinkles out of the jobless. On Friday, job hunters in Arlington, Virginia, who were hoping that they would get a freshened up look, lined up outside a local health facility. They aimed to even out their worry lines for free. People from recruitment agencies were present to gather the patients’ CVs, provide job-searching guidelines and help applicants to polish on their interview skills. Dr. Shapiro remarked, The real success story will be people getting jobs. |
