Aqua-jet liposuction promises reduced bleeding and quicker recovery PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 16 January 2007
Doctors in Singapore have welcomed the development of new technology that uses tiny high powered jets of water to remove fat in liposuction procedures.
Traditional liposuction involves injecting a solution into the treatment area to dissolve the fatty tissue to be removed. However, the water jet assisted liposuction instead uses an ultra-thin, fan shaped jet of water to remove the fatty tissue during the liposuction procedure.

Because this procedure removes the need to inject the patient with solution, the recovery period for patients is dramatically reduced, with less bleeding during the procedure and a consequent reduction in complication rates from the operation.

"The idea is to avoid all the disadvantage of the current method, as [it involves] collecting a lot of fluid in the body which may harm the patient not only within the operation, but also after that," said Dr Harmut Meyer, Medical Director of Praxisklinik Brahmsallee in Singapore.

The other advantage of the water assisted liposuction procedure is that fat removed during the procedure can be transplanted to other parts of the body, since it will have been less contaminated with blood during the procedure. The concept of transplanting fat removed during liposuction has gained popularity in recent years, especially where the transplanted fat is used for a breast augmentation.
