Brazilian couple charged in liposuction death PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 November 2006
The Brazilian cosmetic surgeon arrested after the death of a woman during a liposuction procedure has been charged with her manslaughter.
Luiz Carlos Ribeiro and his wife Ana Maria Miranda Ribeiro were initially charged with unauthorized practice of medicine, but the charges were elevated to manslaughter after autopsy findings indicated that the 23 year old patient, Fabiola de Paula, also a Brazilian national, died as a result of the liposuction allegedly performed by Ribeiro.

The case shocked the tightly knit Brazilian community in Framingham, Mass., when the vibrant 23 year old died in a local hospital after undergoing what was described as back street, basement liposuction. The liposuction was allegedly carried out in the basement of an apartment building, with a massage table being used as an impromptu operating table, and bed linen being used to protect the table from bloodstains.

When miss de Paula displayed problems with her breathing and cardiac function during the liposuction procedure, she was allegedly driven to the local Emergency Room where doctors worked for 20 minutes to revive her, without success.

Both pleaded not guilty and were ordered held on bail.
