British plastic surgeon on trial after liposuction death in UAE PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 May 2008
Seven people, including a 61 year old British plastic surgeon, have been committed for trial in Dubai, following the death of a 27 year old housewife who was undergoing a liposuction procedure in the United Arab Emirates.
The British plastic surgeon performing the liposuction in Dubai, named only by his initials "A.B", is accused of negligence after leaving the woman to die after the procedure. He is also accused of allowing a 41 year old Indian cleaner, named in court as "M.K." to participate in the liposuction surgery. The ful set of charges brought against the doctor and his colleagues include professional misconduct, negligence and malpractice.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Ali Saeed Khalaf told the Dubai court that shortly after the liposuction procedure had commenced at the hospital, the 55 year old Egyptian anaesthetist left the hospital for what were described as "personal reasons". He was followed by the plastic surgeon, who complained of being tired from performing surgery. The plastic surgeon is alleged to have instructed a 48 year old Pakistani nurse, "S.N." to wake the patient, despite her still being anaesthetised. It is alleged that the nurse, in following the instructions of the doctor, administered a reviving injection and switched off the patient's respirator, leading to respiratory failure and death.

On the second day of the trial, a lawyer representing one of the two accused doctors, asked the court to impose reporting restrictions on the case.  Advocate Dr Mohammad Al Rokn asked the court "to issue an order preventing the media from covering this case in order to maintain the reputation of the two doctors and of the UAE's health sector." The judge, Abdul Jawad, did not grant the request, but listed the plea in the record of the case.
