Mrs Hendry, a mother of four, is married to leading soccer player Colin Hendry, who was the captain of Blackburn Rovers and the Scottish national team. She underwent the £2,400 (USD$4,500) procedure at Broughton Park Hospital near Preston, in northern England, in 2002. She was one of several women who subsequently ladged complaints with the UK's General Medical Council, against the surgeon Dr Gustaf Aniansson. He has since voluntarily had his name removed from the UK's register of surgeons, but is free to practice surgery in other countries. Mrs Hendry still nurses an open wound that she has to dress each day. She said: "We hoped that eventually it would close but it hasn't, so I have to keep it as free from infection as possible. "It's always at the back of my mind. Sometimes I get down about it but I have so much to be thankful for. I have four children and they keep me busy." "For a long time after it happened, I was riddled with guilt. I felt I'd done all this out of vanity and put my family through all that worry. "I just wanted a quick fix after having four babies." |
