Lipo dissolve versus Mesotherapy PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 August 2006
With thousands of providers touting dozens of new cosmetic products and techniques each month, consumers may find it overwhelming to distinguish which treatment is right for them. One particularly gray area involves body sculpting. A new treatment called LipoDissolve® (some promoting it as Lipo Dissolve or Lipo-Dissolve) is being called by industry experts as "the most exciting emergence in cosmetic medicine since Botox.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Hagberg, of Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Edina, MN, many physicians and providers are using the terms “mesotherapy” and “LipoDissolve” interchangeably, creating some confusion for consumers. “Although the two treatments are indeed very similar, there are notable differences,” she said. “Unlike traditional meso-therapy, which involves treating the lumps and bumps just under the skin layer, LipoDissolve is a deeper injection into the fat.

LipoDissolve has been utilized for cosmetic purposes since the mid 90s. It is a non-surgical treatment which involves a naturally occurring enzyme solution (and soy product) called phosphatidylcholine deoxycholate, or PCDC, which is administered through a series of micro-injections to permanently dissolve the fat in unwanted areas. PCDC has been used in various medical applications since the 1950s.

After the LipoDissolve injections are administered, fat cells are broken down, absorbed and excreted by the body. The treatment is a safe and effective solution, consistently and predictably dissolving fat in areas typically hard to target with exercise such as the upper and lower abdomen, thighs, buttocks, upper arms and chin. LipoDissolve injections can also be used to improve the appearance of cellulite. It is known to be safe and it provides significantly less downtime than surgical procedures such as liposuction and abdominoplasty. Traditionally after a LipoDissolve treatment, there is no requirement for bed rest or reduced activity and most patients resume their normal schedule immediately. The minimal disruption in their daily agenda is the reason most patients find this treatment so ideal.

Meso-therapy on the other hand is the practice of using a series of micro-injections consisting of a wide range of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and medications placed just under the surface of the skin in the mesoderm.

“Meso-therapy was pioneered in the early 1950s by a French physician and there has not been a standardized formulation for the procedure." Hagberg added. Some doctors feel that these superficial injections are less effective in the breakdown of fat than the deeper injections of LipoDissolve. In addition, a traditional meso-therapy treatment plan would often involve more sessions than a LipoDissolve treatment plan.
