Liposuction – The Before And After Story PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 30 December 2006
Liposuction is a procedure that needs a fair amount of preparation – emotional, physical and economical. Adjustments will need to be made before as well as after the surgery.
Preparing For Liposuction Before The Surgery

Step #1: Meeting the surgeon
During the initial consultation for liposuction, the doctor enquires about particular areas the patient would like to reshape. The doctor examines weight, skin elasticity and age of the patient. The examination of the body helps the doctor to evaluate the patient’s health condition and ability to undergo surgery. It is beneficial for the patient and doctor to have an extensive discussion about the medical history of the patient as it helps in alleviating risk factors before performing surgery.

During the initial consultation, the physician will also tell the patient about the various techniques of liposuction and anesthesia as well as duration of surgery, number of incisions, severity of scarring and bruising and recovery time.

Step #2: Things to take care of before the liposuction surgery

The patient should focus on information provided by the doctor on eating habits, medication, cleansing, hygiene, and clothing to achieve the expected results. Most doctors recommend having blood drawn in advance in case of surgical requirements. Pre-op preparation also includes arrangement of transportation on the day of surgery and for follow-up visits.

The patient should also look into having an adult to take him or her home after the liposuction process is complete. Arranging finances for the payment of the procedure is also something best done beforehand.

Preparing For Life After Liposuction

Step #3: What the patient can expect after the liposuction surgery
Patients of tumescent liposuction have fairly little bruising, swelling and pain. They can walk around immediately after surgery and go home the same day even. In general, during the first few days swelling, bruising and pain are commonly experienced. Pain medication and compression garment help to minimize swelling.

Step #4: Recovery phase
The Recovery Phase of liposuction starts as soon as the surgery ends. The patient needs to follow a few tips to make the recovery faster, safer and painless. The post-liposuction care includes rest, avoiding alcohol, enjoying a proper diet, taking pain medications and the use of compression garments. It recommends that patients should walk as soon as possible after the surgery in order to avoid blood clot formation. Patients are instructed to wear compression garments that help to keep the operated area compressed and aid recovery.

The patient’s blood pressure, pulse and oxygen should be monitored closely. The patient also needs to closely monitor the incision daily and is advised to contact the doctor in case of any problem like infection or bleeding. The stitches are dissolved or removed within two weeks.

Strenuous activities should be avoided in the recovery phase. Follow-up visits help the doctor and the patient to analyze recovery and assist in dealing with any side effects of the surgery immediately and effectively.

Possible complications may include scarring, an irregular appearance around the liposuction site and the return of fatty deposits after the surgery.

Step #5: Your new look after liposuction
Much to the delight of patients, the results of surgery become evident very soon. Most of the swelling subsides within four to six weeks and the final shape is observable after 3 months with any mild swelling also vanishing.

The patient will also need to adjust to the new body image and to reactions of close friends and family to the surgery.

In general, preparing for liposuction before and after surgery is a good idea because it ensures that the patient’s expectation and the final results are a good match. Pre-op preparations set realistic expectations and post-op care ensures that those expectations are fulfilled.
