Liposuction in Dubai ruins Iraqi woman's marriage plans PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 November 2007
A 40 year old woman who escaped Iraq to find a new life has had her marriage plans dashed because of a liposuction and tummy tuck that has left her permanently scarred, a Dubai court was told.
The woman agreed to undergo what was described as laser liposuction and abdominoplasty in advance of her forthcoming wedding. In accusing the Dubai-based medical centre and its physician of ethical wrongdoing and medical malpractice, she told the court that the surgeon had promised that the operation would leave no scarring, but the resulting inverted T-scar disfigurement is "a permanent deformity".

The doctor in the case has already been the subject of a criminal complaint, lodged by Ali Al Kaabi, the uncle of a young Emirati bride who died after undergoing a liposuction procedure in Dubai.

The Dubai Civil court referred the matter to a specialist panel of three doctors for investigation. The panel reported back to the court that, although the medical facility needs improvement, there was no mismanagement "from the technical point of view of the operation or the outcome". However, they said that the doctor had misbehaved ethically in ignoring the patient's complaint. They also found his advertising to be misleading, recommended that he ceases to use any advertisement which would cause confusion to the general public.

The woman, who does not wish to be named said:

My hopes to have a new life got terminated following this incident. I read a newspaper advertisement which said the centre and the doctor does liposuction using advanced laser equipment. The doctor advised me with a liposuction and abdominoplasty with laser to avoid any scar and at the same time he would correct an old scar of previous laparotomy using laser. He asked for Dh22,000.

The Civil Court will reconvene next month to consider the recommendations of the specialist panel and to make judgement.
