Liposuction leads to second flesh eating bug victim PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 09 February 2007
As news emerges of a lawsuit filed by a woman against her doctor in Canada for a liposuction procedure that she alleges led to infection with a flesh eating bug, a Florida woman is alleging that she too, was a victim of the disease after undergoing liposuction.
Marcia Baird, 47, of Florida, underwent liposuction at a South Beach cosmetic surgery clinic, under the guidance of Dr. J. Howell Tiller two years ago. She now alleges that within 48 hours of the procedure, she nearly died in the emergency room of a local hospital as necrotizing fasciitis caused by the flesh eating bacteria took hold.

"I had gone septic," Baird said. "I went into renal failure and all of my organs were shutting down."

The ER doctor that treated her, Dr. Paul Wigoda said: "I would have bet my house that she wasn't going to make it through the night. That's how sick she was."

After stabilizing in the emergency room, Baird was put into a chemically induced coma for three months so that surgeons could remove the infected flesh in an attempt to save her life. They then grafted healthy pieces of skin from unaffected areas of her body, to cover the areas that had been ravaged by the bacteria.

While it is possible that the bacteria was contracted during the liposuction procedure, there is every likelihood that the infection was contracted after the procedure and outside the cosmetic surgery clinic. The isolated nature of the case and the absence of other patients who contracted necrotizing fasciitis after liposuction at the clinic will add to the clinic's defence.
