Liposuction leaves woman without one buttock PDF Print E-mail

A German belly dancer was awarded compensation of 17,500 Euros (USD$23,300) after her plastic surgeon accidentally removed one of her buttocks in a botched liposuction procedure.
Julia "Cleopatra" Meyer was conscious of her hip size during her performances and had sought liposuction to address the problem.

"I had been unhappy with my saddlebags, the fat stored in the outer thigh area," she said. "Because of the local anesthesia I did not realize what he was doing.

"When I saw afterwards that half of my butt was missing I almost fainted. It had been completely sucked away."

During the hearing, Meyer said that she could no longer offer dance and gymnastic courses or perform her belly dancing routine. She added that the failed liposuction has made her too ashamed of her body to go to a swimming pool.

The court heard that Meyer's plastic surgeon had removed fat from her right buttock instead of her thighs. The court ordered him to pay Meyer 17,533 euros ($23,357) compensation, double the amount she had herself sought.

A plastic surgeon at the Berlin Charité hospital, speaking as an expert witness, called the surgery a "grave error in treatment."
