Liposuction procedure results in death of Australian woman PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 31 January 2007
A 26 year old Australian woman has died in hospital after undergoing a straightforward liposuction procedure on her thighs and buttocks.
Lauren James died Monday, shortly after undergoing liposuction performed at the Centre of Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, Caulfield, in the Australian state of Victoria. She had complained of pain in the treated area and continued bleeding over the weekend.

A coroner will hold an inquest to ascertain the cause of her death and determine if it was linked to the liposuction.

"If it turns out that it was the surgery that caused Lauren's death, we would want to prevent it happening to someone else," her brother said.

Dr Norm Olbourne, a spokesman for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, said regulation was needed in vanity surgery.

He said "Doctors should be forced to reveal their qualifications to patients and have a "gold standard" or surgical qualification."

"We would fully endorse an investigation into the dangers and complications that can arise from what is seen as routine cosmetic surgery."

A government spokeswoman commented: "Government regulations require that all liposuction is performed in a licensed day procedure centre."
