Liposuction used to generate stem cells PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 February 2007
Spanish surgeons are claiming a world first in using liposuction to extract stem cells for a patient's treatment.
Surgeons at Gregorio Marañon in Madrid claimed that this is a unique breakthrough for the generation of stem cells to be used in the treatment of a patient. In this case, the stem cells that were extracted through liposuction were used to treat the 67 year old Spanish man who was suffering from angina and damaged coronary arteries.

"It's a medical milestone," said Francisco Fernandez-Aviles, chief cardiologist at the hospital. "The patient is fine."

The liposuction procedure was performed on the patient's stomach to remove fat, from which the surgeons extracted and purified the stem cells. The stem cells were then injected into the patient's heart, where doctors hope they will form additional blood vessels and heart muscle.

This is the first known time when liposuction was used to extract fat for a secondary purpose, since normally the removal of the fat is the goal in itself. Using liposuctioned fat to harvest stem cells is potentially a huge improvement for stem cell therapy, since, unlike stem cells removed from bone marrow, these fat cells did not need to be cultivated for three weeks before use.
