Mexican doctor who posed as "plastic surgeon" arrested after botched liposuction procedures PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 December 2007
A doctor who allegedly posed as a plastic surgeon and injured unsuspecting patients in dozens of botched liposuction, facelift and breast implant procedures has been arrested in Mexico.
Agustin Huerta Navarro, 48 is currently awaiting trial in prison in the Mexican state of Jalisco, on suspicion of committing crimes of "medical irresponsibility and damages", according to a statement from the state attorney general's office. Already, 43 complaints have been filed against the doctor, seven of which are so serious that they justified the doctor's arrest and investigation.

While Huerta Navarra is qualified as a medical doctor, he is not a specialised plastic surgeon, and he is therefore prohibited from performing surgically invasive procedures such as liposuction or breast augmentation.

Included in the complaints made against him are allegations that he used hard "sell tactics" on potential clients, sometimes putting potential patients under pressure to undergo surgery on the day that he first met them. Good medical procedure would normally require the doctor to allow a cooling off period for patients to consider the likely outcome and risk of surgery, as well as preparing themselves for the surgery and the recovery period it would entail.

Any other patients who feel that they may have suffered as a result of Huerta Navarro's actions have been asked to contact the attorney general's office in Jalisco, Mexico.
