The FDA in the United States has finally approved the use of the SmartLipo system for laser assisted lipolysis.
SmartLipo has proved hugely popular and successful in Europe, where it has been used in Laser Body Sculpting, a procedure that disrupts fat cells and tightens the skin around the treated area. The SmartLipo system has proven popular with patients and cosmetic surgeons alike since it offers a less invasive form of liposuction and tighter control of the area to be treated.
SmartLipo uses a small cannula containing a laser fiber that the surgeon inserts into the skin around the treatment area. The laser's energy is applied directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and drain away. Smartlipo treatments generally result in less swelling and bleeding as compared to traditional liposuction methods and can usually be performed in one 45-minute session.
