The lowdown on liposuction for men PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 December 2006
Liposuction for men is a fairly recent phenomenon. As a form of plastic surgery, liposuction was traditionally considered appropriate mostly for women. However with changing trends this is no longer the case. Today, men are giving equal importance to their appearance and consider a well-sculpted body necessary for success – both personal and professional. As men are realizing the benefits of age erasing and the body-sculpting effects of liposuction through TV talk shows, articles and newspapers, liposuction for men is becoming more and more popular.
Is there any difference between liposuction for men and women?

The liposuction technique remains more or less the same for both men and women. However, because of the structure of a man’s body some technical differences do exist.

The main difference between men and women with regard to liposuction is the thickness of skin. Men have thicker skin than women. The male body also has a greater blood supply than that of women. This can lead to excessive bleeding and greater chances of pooling of blood (hematoma) under the skin. Also, the muscles under the chin are thicker in men than they are in women but this doesn’t create much of a problem.

One factor in favor of liposuction for men is that as compared to females, fat under the skin is firm and vascular in males. Men also retain skin elasticity longer. These factors make liposuction for men very effective.
Which technique is best suited for liposuction for men?

The technique for liposuction for men stays the same as that for women. Tumescent liposuction with local anesthesia helps to remove large amounts of fat without surgical blood loss, with reduced discomfort, and a faster recovery. The vacuum suction is inserted in the fatty layer of skin through a small incision and fat is removed. This liposuction technique is considered optimum for both – men and women.

Which areas are treated by liposuction for men?

Women usually have more fat in areas like hips, buttocks, stomach, knees, lower leg, cheeks, and the double chin. Men on the other hand tend to store fat around the abdomen and the neckline. Although men can opt for liposuction in any body part the most popular among them are: -
  • The “love handles”
  • Breasts (gynecomastia)
  • Abdomen
  • Neckline
How long does recovery take?

Recovery can take a day or a week – it depends upon the extent of surgery. After 2-3 days most patients can resume their daily activities but strenuous activities require at least a week of recuperation. Wearing compressions can help to minimize the swelling, aid proper healing and result in a faster recovery.
What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia has originated from two Greek words gyne and mastos, which mean woman and breast respectively. It means abnormally large breasts on men.

Large breasts can sometimes develop in adolescent men but usually disappear by the age of 14-15. If the breasts persist into adulthood the condition is diagnosed as Gynecomastia. Surgery can be used to reinstate a masculine chest shape. Weight loss in case of obesity can also alter the Gynecosmastic condition but not necessarily.

As fashion trends change men too are now required to be conscious of their bodies. A perfect shape can significantly impact a man’s self perception and self esteem and is often associated with his general life status. Liposuction for men is thus far more common than it used to be and is gaining mass acceptance slowly but surely.
