Torsoplasty - the all-in procedure for men PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 16 January 2007
The growing popularity of plastic surgery among men, and the different problem areas that men seek to address though cosmetic procedures has led one of New York's leading plastic surgeons to coin the term "torsoplasty", a procedure that targets man boobs, beer bellies and love handles.
Dr. Elliot Jacobs, a top plastic surgeon and author of the book "Mantalk: Tips from the Pros for Great Looks, Good Health and Maintaining Your Competitive Edge" says that a growing number of men are turning to liposuction and plastic surgery to get the look that they want when diet and exercise are eluding them

“There is a new group of men who are relatively fit but may have a few extra pounds and a few extra bulges that they just can’t seem to lose,” he said.

"They aren’t looking to drastically change their bodies but want to firm up their problem areas with a natural-looking result."

His new procedure combines liposuction and abdominoplasty, and reduces the size of their man boobs, tucks in any flabby tummy tissue and sucks away the fat that forms love handles. He calls it a torsoplasty, since it covers the entire area from the neck to the groin.

“In one procedure, I can give them a shape that diet and exercise simply can’t give them,” Dr. Jacobs said.

Dr. Jacobs is a specialist in gynecomastia, a condition that affects up to 60% of men, resulting in the development of glandular and fatty tissue in the male chest, resembling breasts. The condition, commonly known as man boobs, is thought to be caused by an imbalance of hormones in the body, although other factors such as obesity, alcohol use and cannabis consumption are suspected to play a part in the condition.

He says that the procedure is aimed at men who may be a few pounds overweight but who aren't able to achieve the result they want through diet and exercise alone.

“This isn’t a treatment for obesity,” he warned. “They have to be healthy and reasonably fit. It’s for those men who want to go from being a little pudgy to trim and buff.”
