Trial Being Held After A Woman Died During a Liposuction Procedure PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 20 May 2009
A surgeon at a North York cosmetic surgery health facility will face a disciplinary trial to respond to accusations of incompetence and professional misconduct involving numerous patients, including a single mom who died in 2007 after a liposuction procedure.

Three cases, in which patients purportedly got poor-quality care in 2007 from Dr. Behnaz Yazdanfar, who is the head of a team of physicians at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic at 5400 Yonge St, were being outlined by a notice of hearing that was brought out yesterday by the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The most serious accusations concern Krista Stryland, a successful real estate agent who went to the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic for stomach reduction surgical procedure, but ended up dead. The story of the 32-year-old single mom has made headlines, even though the college only categorizes her as "Patient A."
On September 20, Stryland visited the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic, and during the operation, her heart stopped. She was then rushed to North York General hospital, where efforts on reviving her were not successful. She was then pronounced dead.

The notice of hearing says, "Dr. Yazdanfar is incompetent and failed to maintain the standard of the practice of the profession in her cosmetic surgery practice in relation to her care of Patient A." Dr. Yazdanfar's execution of the procedure during the liposuction and her postoperative care and treatment of the patient are being condemned by the college. The college also argues that Dr. Yazdanfar "engaged in disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional conduct" when she purportedly failed to come with Stryland or to send someone who knows her case when she was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance.

There were hardly any details brought out about the other two patients (one of whom is 66 years of age).
After graduating from the University of Ottawa in 1994, Dr. Yazdanfar was a family doctor. In 2000, she started concentrating on cosmetic surgical procedures, as stated on her profile in the clinic's website.

No date has been set yet for the disciplinary hearing.
