Tumescent liposuction: An end to surgical dangers PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 18 December 2006
Tumescent liposuction is a recent technique in which local anesthesia (lidocaine and epinedhrine) is used instead of general anesthesia or IV sedation. It has resulted in decreased discomfort and bruising, quicker recovery, and less swelling among tumescent liposuction patients.
What is the procedure for tumescent liposuction?

In the procedure for tumescent liposuction a large amount of anesthetic solution is injected into the targeted areas of fat. This injected fluid causes the targeted areas to become swollen and firm or “tumescend”. This in turn facilitates the canulla to move smoothly under the skin of the treated area. This technique controls blood loss and results in very little swelling.
Who are the ideal candidates for tumescent liposuction?

Any person who is considering traditional liposuction is a good candidate for tumescent liposuction. Any area can be treated under tumescent liposuction but areas that require more accuracy such as the face, neck, ankles, arms and calves are mostly treated by this technique. A person having large areas of excess fat is also best treated by tumescent liposuction.
How long does it takes to recover?

Patients treated under tumescent liposuction recover faster than under traditional liposuction. There is significantly less bruising with tumescent liposuction because of:
  1. little blood loss and
  2. rapid drainage of blood-tinged anesthetic solution. Quick drainage of the anesthetic solution speeds up the rate of healing and reduces pain, swelling and bruising.
Steps for a faster recovery

For faster recovery, the drainage of fluid can be maximized by:
  • Wearing compression garments to promote drainage.
  • Stitching of the incision with special absorptive pads rather than stitches. The absorptive pads sponge up the fluid faster.
  • Keeping the incision open and not closed with sutures.
  • Placing tiny holes in the skin to encourage drainage.
What are risks associated with tumescent liposuction?

Although tumescent liposuction is the safest form of liposuction, patients still face some risks and complications. The specific risks associated with tumescent liposuction are:
  • An overdose of lidocaine in the tumescent solution
  • Pulmonary edema (collection of fluid in the lungs)
  • Excess volume of fat removed
  • Excess number of areas treated on a single day
There have been no reported deaths yet under tumescent liposuction totally by local anesthesia. Even when general anesthesia is combined with the tumescent technique, it is relatively safe.

What are the benefits of tumescent liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction by local anesthesia allows a patient to remain conscious throughout the procedure. It uses microcannulas that generate extremely smooth cosmetic results. Tumescent liposuction solution shrinks widespread capillaries resulting in minimal bleeding during the surgery.
Tumescent liposuction is by far the safest form of liposuction. Minimized surgical blood loss, less bruising and swelling and reduced pain make it the preferred technique with both doctors and patients alike.
