Two doctors have been suspended in the United Arab Emirates, following the recent death of a woman who had undergone liposuction. The 27 year old Emirati women is said to have suffered brain damage during the 90,000 dirhams procedure, falling into a coma and dying three days later.
According to sources at the Department of Health and Medical Services, the initial investigation will focus on the conduct of the surgeon and the anaesthetist during the procedure. Their licences have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation and other hospitals have been notified that the men cannot be employed until the investigation is complete. The investigation will be managed by a committee comprising a neurosurgeon, an anaesthetist and two plastic surgeons.
According to Doctor Ramadhan Ibraheem, of DOHMS,
We started our investigation and we are awaiting an autopsy report. At the moment we can’t say whether it’s the doctors’ mistake or negligence. We need to finish the investigation to know how this sad tragedy occurred. If there was negligence then we will hand over all our information to the Public Prosecution to make a case.
Doctor Sanata Vasisht, a surgeon at the New Lifestyle Clinic in Dubai, suggested several reasons why the young woman may have died:
She could have had some pre-existing condition that was not identified before the surgery. It could have been professional negligence by a doctor who was not properly trained. It could have been a reaction to a foreign body or even simply shock. The Dubai based DOHMS received 89 complaints of medical negligence in hospitals and medical centres last year, with 32 of those complaints upheld. The complaints were made against 36 private hospitals and clinics and 4 government run hospitals.
